When will bias against ‘illegals’ no longer be acceptable?

An excellent article published by Andrew Greeley: in the Chicago Sun Times.

I wonder when it will become unfashionable to engage in slurs against Mexican immigrants — they don’t work hard, they don’t learn to speak English, they are taking money away from other Americans, some of them may be terrorists, they don’t drive trucks safely.

The well-educated, upper-middle-class nativist bigot will justify his position with the argument: I don’t have anything against them, but I resent the fact that they’re ILLEGAL!

If such an argument comes from one who never drives five miles above the speed limit or never parks in a no-parking zone or never jaywalks or never sneaks away from a parking meter, then they are without sin and can throw the first stone. But few of us are innocent of misdemeanors. Should we therefore be gathered up and shipped away, separated from our families, treated by some government agencies the same way we treated Chinese coolies at the end of the 19th century? Should we be deprived of basic human rights? Should Americans be free to dismiss us as criminals who must be ostracized?

To enter the United States without the proper papers is a misdemeanor like double parking. Does it justify a righteous anger that permits storm troopers to break up families or deprive young people of an education or adults of health care, including chemotherapy for cancer?

When will it happen that the American media will treat the i-word with the same care as they treat the n-word or the k-word or the f-word — all words that are bleeped out or repudiated or cost people their jobs? When will it happen that this hardworking, family-oriented, reliable group of human beings is protected from the storm troopers and the vigilantes who are like the Ku Klux Klan? When will Mexican immigrants become politically correct?

Not in this generation.

    Yeah, why should illegal’s have to pay into the federal tax system, social security and Medicare systems when they can take advantage of the programs for free and have the citizens of this country pay for them? Why shouldn't they get a free college education while my kids have to go into debt for years to get the same thing? Why should illegal’s pay for healthcare when they can get it for free – while those of us who went through the process the correct and legal way – pay for them? To equate what they are doing as no worse as double-parking – is an insult. And that's the Truth of it.

    They shouldn't be allowed any of those things you mention don't get any of those things.

    Illegals cannot get on welfare, they cannot draw social security, the are not given free housing nor do they qualify for Section 8. The majority of illegals never see the gates of college.

    Not a very valid argument you have there. You might want to stick to your work at Fidelity Investments in Boston my friend.

    The same people that are screaming about how Mexican immigrants are "stealing our jobs" are the also insisting that they are sucking from the public teat, doesn't make sense, does it? They insist on one hand that Mexicans are sneaking in to live a high life on welfare and public handouts and at the same time putting hardworking, God fearing Americans out of work.

    Tell you what Longhaul. If you can present CONCRETE PROOF of your assertions, post them here. And I am not talking about claptrap babble from the ultra right that make this shit up to push their anti-Mexican agenda.

    The majority of the illegals entering this country come here to WORK, not live off the system. If they have false documents, SS cards etc., it is to obtain a job so they can WORK!

    Logically, if they were to try to use these documents to obtain public assistance, the system would kick it back as false, or in the least, lead to a denial of benefits because the public agency giving welfare would be tied into various databases that would catch this

    If you are referring to the WIC program (Women, Infants, Children) and the child of an illegal is born here, I don't have a damned bit of a problem with my tax dollars providing milk or formula. For Christ's sakes, these are children that didn't ask to be brought into the world.

    You might want to get out of your little cocoon where all you see is black and white and look around you.

    Genie, Contrary to what the fool states, his post were not edited except to strip out the profanity and to add a closing tag to one of his links so it would not knock my css out of alignment.

    Fortunately, hateful little attack sites like his get little notice except for those like him.
