Don't know why you couldn't post over there Calderon. There are no restrictions. I'll look into it when I have time. You refer to those old unsafe trucks. They don't even come into the argument. Those trucks are bought for one purpose and that is to shuttle trailers across the border. Nothing more. They buy them after the fleets are done with them and put them to work. They are roadworthy for what they are used for and the Texas DPS makes damn sure they don't have major mechanical defects. Especially since they built all the inspection stations along the Texas border. You will be hard pressed to find the mythical "bald tire" even. It's the same thing as the port haulers do here in this country. They buy a high mileage used truck and work the thing till the wheels fall off. The statement in that article, therefore was true. I don't see them being substituted either. Look at Tranportes Olympic. Out of 35 trucks, they have 2 authorized to cross the border under the program. That is the same as all of the other companies who have applied and been approved. None of these Mexican companies are committing their entire fleets to this program as some would suggest.

I was unable to post to the other thread on "Safety Myths"... Seems there was discussion there on trucks used for cross-border transfer, which are not the actual trucks used for long-haul trucking. Waving off safety issues with a "yeah, but we're not going to use those old, unsafe trucks, we're going to use new, safe, expensive trucks for long-haul US trucking". Well, that raises question after question. Why maintain the older, unsafe trucks in their fleet at all? Are these trucking firms unscrupulous in subjecting their drivers to old, unsafe equipment? Are they so greedy that they need to skim every last peso by scrimping on proper infrastructure for their operation? And as long as ANY older, unsafe vehicles remain in their fleet, I'd say there IS definitely at least some chance that one may be substituted for the long-haul trucks, should the firm get in a bind. Again and again, they pay lip service to level playing field, but the actions do not appear to reflect it.

The facts to back up what I say are contained in the documents available for download on this site. They are in the public domain and also available from the source, the same way I found them. What matters is, is that when they present themselves at our borders, and enter this country, that they follow the rules and regulations that we have set out for us, for them and for Canada. There is no evidence or reason to believe they will not do so. Canadian regs differ from the U.S. in a lot of ways, yet when the Cannucks come down, they are under our rules and law. Even the French Canadians who barely speak English, if any. The point being, there is only one way to run a profitable trucking business. Follow the rules, concentrate on safety and be competitive. The differences in U.S. and Mexican companies as far as competitiveness goes is miniscule and considering the number of trucks we can expect in this country, not really a problem. The U.S has 11 million CDL holders, Mexico has 270,000. Were you to put everyone of those in a truck and allow operations in this country, which logically could never happen, they still would not make an appreciable difference. And you know? As I have dug deeper into this in the past few days, evidence from the past suggests this has absolutely nothing to do with safety nor differences in laws and regulations between the two countries. It is simply fear of competition, protectionism and politics. This has been happening for the past 12 years. This is all documented. And when people like Senator Dorken (that is not a misspelling) say, "why do we need to rush this through"? Nothing is being rushed. This issue has been on the table for the past 12 years and each year improvements are being made. In the eyes and minds of the critics, if we keep delaying it year after year, the argument from the opposition will never change. The deck is stacked more against Mexico by allowing American carriers in than it is stacked against us. Think about that!

There is no indication they will haul freight for any less than we will James. If you are talking about freight rates, the Mexican carriers are as competitive as us or the Canadians. It's all about making a profit. I don't see where it makes any difference what the Mexican driver is willing to accept as wages. Hell, in the U.S. we have drivers working for .25 per mile on up to .40+cpm. That's personal choice. And I wouldn't think that be it 5 or 500 Mexican trucks running in the U.S., it is not going to make any difference to our bottom line nor to the U.S. drivers income or bottom line. That's simply something the critics have put out there to scare the hell out of you and it's working. The fuel they buy in Mexico is not 15000ppm although I wish the hell it was. I have a diesel Jetta and it loves that stuff. Up until 1993, Mexico's version of the EPA followed the guidelines of the U.S. EPA. At the pumps, the sell 500ppm diesel and a news release the earlier part of the year stated PEMEX was retrofitting some of their refineries to produce the new crap (ULSD) It stands to reason since the dealers lots down here are full of 07 model trucks. James, there are no "former" U.S. drivers and their won't be, unless the U.S. driver decided to go into another line of work. Here in Laredo, we have freight sitting on the docks waiting to be moved. Melton Truck Lines has at least 20 trailers loaded and ready to go in their terminal here at any one time. Warren Transportation, the same thing. And I could go on and one. We have trucks lined up here waiting to get load. You and others are upset because you have been fed a line of bullshit that would choke a mule and you've all fallen for it. Your country, my country, our country is not being invaded. It is not being sold down the road to a new North American Union. It is business as usual. And if you'll stop to think a minute. All the crap you've been told by the Teamsters, OOIDA, Public Citizen, the Sommers family and others, where is the proof to back up their claims? Where is the hard evidence of what they all claim. The mexican domicile companys will not have the road tax and many other taxes that USA companys must pay,but yet they will be using our hiways. The fuel that they buy in mexico is 15,000 ppm. Which is cheaper to make and pollution is much higher. Ours is now at 5 ppm. Can't you see that the playing field is not level. All the loads that they bring into the USA is a load that a former USA driver would be hauling. How can you not see why we are upset. And no need to say i am racist against the mexicans. James, You've asked a question I have been trying to get answered for almost a year. I am going to try to make a trip to Monterrey next week when I return home and I also have a shout out to a friend in Monterrey who can be counted on to get answers. I am aware of the U.S. rates. Driver pay along the border in the U.S., especially in Laredo and the RGV is between .28 and .32 cpm. One thing is for certain, the Mexican drivers will be paid in pesos. They are only extending the territory they travel in. Nothing more. I imagine they will be given advances in dollars to cover their expenses in the U.S. since the cost of a meal is almost double what it would be in Mexico. I would also imagine that the companies would have to sweeten the deal a little to help covers the drivers expenses unless they were given a set amount, say $20 a day for food. Drivers wages in Mexico are somewhere between .18 and .22 cpm. Below ours but in Mexico, if a driver runs 2500 miles per week, he is earning, on the low end, $440.00 per week. Convert that to pesos, figure about $4900 pesos per week, more or less. Not a bad wage in a country where a factory worker earns $1200 pesos a week on average for a 40 hour work week. As I said, I can not answer factually, yet. But since anecdotal evidence seems to be the rule of this issue in some quarters, here are some facts for you to consider. In 2000, I had a truck leased to Celadon. This was when they were beginning the Jaguar operation. They paid the Mexican drivers .18cpm to participate. This was a penny or so a mile more than they were getting in Mexico at the time and about a dime less than the American drivers were being paid. (by the way, Celadon was sued by these Mexican drivers over pay disparity) This was 7 years ago. Today, in El Manana, the Nuevo Laredo newspaper, there are numerous ads for border shuttle drivers. The average pay offered for these guys is $200 pesos per crossing for a van and $250 pesos per crossing for a flatbed (platforma) Consider if the shuttle can make 3 trips minimum per day and earn $600 pesos, multiply that by 6 which gives these guys and income of $3600 pesos per week and they are home every night. Doesn't it stand to reason that the long haul drivers in Mexico are making a better wage than this to drive long haul, including into the United States? Otherwise, what would be the incentive?

I heard something about the inspection your mentioned on one of the overnight shows that has little credibility, but efforts to find the video were without success. Why don't you point me to it. I did find a website run by a group of vigilantes, Minutemen, I think they call themselves, which is an insult to the original Minutemen who fought the Redcoats up Boston way, but that's besides the point. The site featured three photos. One of a cabover International claiming to have bald steering tires. The straight on side shot showed the smooth sidewall but nothing of the tread leaving the viewer to be forced to accept that is was as claimed. Two other photos, of a Schneider trailer which the vigilantes claimed to be a Mexican trailer, had tread visible but it was difficult to tell because of the bad photography. Perhaps that was on purpose. The third photo showed a purported Mexican trailer although there is no proof of that with adequate tread on the tires. It is difficult to photograph a tire unless you are on top of it. I've tried. So to answer your first question, "Where does that leave you", it leaves me in the same position as I was end before I read your comment. I never said a word about "impecable" safety standards. I simply said that inspection data available for the past 5 years showing Mexican trucks coming from a 44% OOS rate to an OOS rate of 21.something% slightly below the average for American trucks. Also, the statistics show only a couple of violations for drug and alcohol, pretty much putting the brakes on that argument, at least for those of us with enough common sense to see it. The facts or "facts" as you express them are exactly what the courts will use to decide these frivolous lawsuits being filed. The complainants have no "facts' to back their arguments. The Teamsters are betting the farm on that ridiculous piece of ""purchased" journalism by Charles Bowden which he was hired to write and which at best, is an interesting piece of fiction. OOIDA and the rest are following the Teamsters lead. Nothing more. The rules have been set out as to how this is to proceed. The rules clearly state how the program is to be administered and the procedures and rules the Mexican drivers will be operating under. If the states choose not to enforce the rules, the fault lies with the states, not the program itself. FMCSA has not lied about anything that I've seen. However, for lack of a better argument, the critics fall back on calling them liars. Now, to answer your question #1. Not only do I not believe the Mexican truckers will deliberately try to slip illegal loads across the border, I know for a fact they will not! 1. There is no gain. The chance of being caught is too great and these guys are not going to risk doing time in a Federal Prison in the U.S. for a few bucks. Know what the going rate to haul and illegal is at the moment? For the trucker, about $150-225 per head. To carry a "package to Dallas or elsewhere? Maybe a grand, if that. 2. Illegal aliens DO NOT cross the border in the back of semi trucks. They walk, they swim, they might come across in the trunks of cars as a last resort. They are held in safe houses on the U.S. side of the border until transport can be found north for those who have paid, and a place to keep the others who still owe the coyotes money, until they are paid. 3. Drugs come across the border strapped to peoples bodies, backpacked across by professional mules, driven across where there is not a natural barrier such as in El Paso, New Mexico and Arizona. Drugs are stored in stash house also along the border until a stupid ass truck driver is found to take them north. Where are these truckers found? The truck stops, beer joints and strip clubs on both sides of the border. The majority of them seem to get caught though, if not at the internal CBP checks, then by some deputy sheriff or trooper during a routine traffic stop. These are all documented facts if you look. The DEA website and their annual reports is a good place to start. Now, question #1 is answered and if you'll take a moment to think about it, you will see the truth and logic in it. But if your argument is "The Mexican trucks will bring drugs, wabs and WMD's into this country", that argument simply has no validity. Let's pretend the Mexican demonstration project is nothing more than an idea in a bureaucrats mind. It doesn't exist. Let's pretend most provisions of NAFTA never were agreed to. I have doubts that anything ever happened to you in Mexico, if indeed you have ever been to the interior of the country. Trailero.. Where to start.. Well first, If you cannot admit that mexico, as a government, AND society are crooked as they come, you are either a LIAR, or some idot that has never even been there. I have been robbed numerous times by the policia, and robbed and beaten once by the federalis, who also threatened to kill me if I did not get more money, pronto. Also, if you beleive for one minute that mexican truckers will not deliberately try to take illegal cargo accross the border including people and drugs, you have again proven your lack of credibility on the subject. I have driven a truck since before I was legaly old enough to do so, and have seen many many things. I have taken one load into mexico, to monterey thru reynosa. NEVER AGAIN! As far as the bombs comming thru, I dont think that will happen until the terrorrists figure out how to pose as mexicans, which will eventualy be attempted. Iam sure that he would be honored to have you answer some of the listeners questions, since you seem to have unlimited knowledge in this subject. Hay Trailero, If your own GVT. weren't so darned corrupt you could make an honest living in Mexico and wouldn't have to come to MY country to make a living then take our money back and spend it in your country.
