Texas eyeing plan to make driver’s licenses into mini passports

Texas is looking at a plan that, if approved, would create a driver’s license that also acts as a passport for those who drive to and from Mexico on a regular basis.According to the El Paso Times, the licenses would contain a computer chip that would hold all of the information normally found on a passport. The licenses would cost about $40 each.

But before the plan can move forward, Gov. Rick Perry has asked the state’s attorney general to review it and make sure it doesn’t violate any federal regulations.

By 2008, federal rules will require anyone returning from Mexico or Canada by land to provide a passport at the U.S. border.
