EL PASO — County commissioners are opposing construction of a wall along the nation’s southern border with a resolution. The El Paso County Commissioners Court voted 3-1 Monday in favor of a resolution that calls for stopping the building of the border wall and says local law enforcement officials should not enforce federal immigration laws. The resolution also emphasizes placing a moratorium on immigration raids, ensuring the enforcement of labor laws and civil protection regardless of a worker’s immigration status and stopping programs that criminalize immigrants. Commissioner Veronica Escobar said the commissioners aren’t advocating having open borders or not enforcing ….Read More
On April 16, 2008, Lou Dobbs took his “advocacy journalism”1 to a new low in mischaracterizing Pope Benedict XVI’s recent visit to the United States. False Claim: Pope Benedict supports “amnesty” and wants the U.S. to “ease any enforcement.” DOBBS: Well, Pope Benedict XVI is in the nation’s capital tonight, there to help the Catholic Church and the Council of Bishops push the amnesty agenda. Pope Benedict himself, obviously, supporting that approach and calling upon the United States to ease any enforcement of U.S. immigration laws. The Facts: The Pope, in fact, did not announce that he supports an “amnesty ….Read More
In a response to anti-immigrant sentiment and an increase in hate crimes against Latinos, a Hispanic rights group launched an effort Thursday to debunk myths espoused by media talk shows and political campaigns. The Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund unveiled the “Truth in Immigration” campaign to rebut legal and factual inaccuracies about immigrants, particularly Latinos, in the United States. “Right now the airwaves are dominated by a few that speak very negatively and falsely about immigrants and immigration,” said John Trasviña, MALDEF president and general counsel. Trasviña said the Web site — www.truthinimmigration.org, which will be updated several ….Read More
I was reading an excellent article today in the San Antonio Express-News entitled Games put new spin on a hot topic. This subject dealt with several people who had developed board and video games in an attempt to give people some idea of what illegal immigrants face in day to day life. But perhaps the most popular game, is a flash based game called BORDER PATROL This is a shoot em up game where your targets are Mexicans and pregnant women. You would think that Americans would have more sense than to take to this trite crap, but no, 577,075 ….Read More
By Warner Todd Huston If a person of Hispanic origin rapes a woman and, in an attempt to catch this violent criminal, police publish a description identifying the suspect’s general racial makeup, is that a “racist” thing to do? Apparently the folks at KMYL (1190 AM) in the metro Phoenix, Arizona area think it is. It appears that we cannot even discuss the basic appearance of a wanted criminal now without being “racist” about it all.
Interesting, to say the least, how great minds think alike. At the risk of unleashing attacks by the opposition, I found this nice little blog, out of Alpine Texas refuting some ridiculous editorial on Mexican Trucks.
Some would have you believe that the “hot button” issue in the trucking community today is allowing Mexican trucks access to the United States past the current 20 mile border inclusion zone. The trucking oriented radio talk shows have made it their number one priority for the past year. Other talk shows with no connection to the trucking community have picked up on the subject. Extremists from the far right have jumped on the bandwagon and of course, the organizations who claim they are advocates representing the public good with concerns for highway safety have jumped in with both feet ….Read More
