Mexico identifies 12 slain as federal agents

MORELIA, Mexico (AP)— Twelve people tortured and killed in a cartel-plagued Mexican state were federal agents investigating organized crime, the government said Tuesday, marking one of the boldest attacks on federal forces since President Felipe Calderon launched his war on drugs. Mexico’s national security spokesman, Monte Alejandro Rubido, said the 11 men and one woman were off duty when they were ambushed and abducted by members of the La Familia drug cartel in Calderon’s home state of Michoacan, which has been a center of his crackdown on organized crime. U.S. Army Spc. Richard Medina Torres, 25, the Fort Hood soldier who drove into Mexico with two high-power firearms will be put on trial, federal authorities said in a statement released Saturday Medina earlier was charged with smuggling weapons into Mexico, punishable by up to 30 years. The Saturday statement did not mention smuggling, which suggests a judge threw out that charge. Police could not be reached late Saturday for clarification.
