Seven charged in Mexico's day-care center fire - Six more sought

MEXICO CITY — Seven state officials have been arrested for negligent homicide in a day care fire that killed 47 children in northern Mexico, an official said Monday. The seven are officials with the northern Sonora state Finance Department, which operated a warehouse where the June 5 fire started, then spread to the adjacent day care center, said Sonora State Attorney General Abel Murrieta. The United States is giving Mexico access to an electronic database to help trace weapons smuggled from the U.S. into the hands of well-armed Mexican drug gangs, U.S. Attorney General Michael Mukasey said Wednesday.The database, known as e-Trace, has already been installed at U.S. consulates in the northern cities of Monterrey and Hermosillo and in the western city of Guadalajara. It will be expanded to the remaining six consulates by March, and should be available in Spanish soon.
