Hoffa rejects responsiblity for job losses over Mexican truck dispute

On Tuesday, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce released a report that looked at the effect of three trade actions/inactions by the Administration are having and will have on American workers. One of the three actions concerned the failure to implement NAFTA trucking provisions, which have been challenged for more than 15 years. Of course, Teamsters President James Hoffa has to chime in with his usual irrelevant opinion.

Mexico years ahead of US on medical requirements for commercial drivers

The Mexican Cross Border Pilot Program enters it 13 month without incident, accident or serious safety violations, the FMCSA has a medical review committee trying to rewrite the requirements for CDL medical examiners and the critics of the Pilot Program continue to insist that that requirements for a Mexican CDL or Licencia Federal Conductor are lax or non existent. This comment here shows just how misinformed and prejudiced the commenter is. All of ….Read More

The national register of information on driver’s license holders – including CDL holders – that’s maintained by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has some big flaws, according to a government audit. In a press release, the U.S. Department of Transportation Inspector General announced that personal information in the database, such as drug or alcohol convictions, could be accessed and used by unauthorized parties. The inspector general also reported that information on convictions sometimes takes more than a year to be entered into the register, that physical characteristics – such as hair and eye color – were missing from 18 ….Read More

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Transportation Secretary Mary E. Peters today joined with U.S. Commerce Secretary Carlos Gutierrez and Mexican Transportation Secretary Luis Tellez in calling on Congress to reconsider its pending prohibition and let the cross border trucking demonstration program between the two nations proceed. “With the change of just a few words, Congress can show that we can trade with the world, keep our highways safe, and our companies competitive at the same time,” Secretary Peters said.

It’s been about a month now since the controversial demonstration program was launched. The FMCSA, as is their right, has now approved [cref mexican-carriers-with-authority-to-operate-in-us-updated-daily 5 Mexican carriers] who have met the super strict requirements for participation in the program. These five carriers, with a total of 15 units cleared to operate in the U.S. are geographically diverse. From Nuevo Leon, to Guanajuato to Jalisco to Baja California, they all appear to be specialty carriers and no threat to the American owner operator.
