New rules for the types of identification U.S. citizens must present to enter the country go into effect today, U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials said
• A U.S. passport OR
• A trusted traveler card such as NEXUS, SENTRI or FAST
Those without a passport must provide a valid driver’s license or military ID plus one of the following:
• U.S. birth certificate issued by a federal, state, provincial, county, territory or municipal authority
• U.S. Consular report of birth abroad
• U.S. Certificate of Naturalization
• U.S. Certificate of Citizenship
• U.S. Citizen Identification Card
Travelers who do not have the newly required documents may be delayed at designated border crossings, officials said. But officers at the Valley’s international bridges will have leeway to admit people who are unaware of the changes once their identities are confirmed.
Mexican citizens will continue to have to present valid passports and visas. U.S. legal residents will also still be required to show a permanent resident card or other evidence of legal residency.
Children under the age of 18 must present an official birth certificate while attempting to cross the border.
And despite what is being reported on some websites, this does not concern truckers participating in the Cross Border Program. At this time, they are not permitted FAST cards.
Entry requirements for this group will be the same as for any Mexican citizen.
And while these ridiculous rules are being put into place, those that might do the country harm are routinely being admitted through our ports and airports, with legal entrance visa’s. Go figure.
