Mexican military on patrol in Nuevo LaredoHitmen tied to Mexico’s Gulf cartel appear to be boldly seeking recruits by posting help-wanted signs in the border city of Nuevo Laredo, including a giant banner hung across a thoroughfare, a federal anti-drug enforcement official said Monday.

The banner appeared over the weekend in Nuevo Laredo near the border with Texas: “Operative group ‘The Zetas’ wants you, soldier or ex-soldier. We offer a good salary, food and benefits for your family. Don’t suffer anymore mistreatment and don’t go hungry.”

The Zetas is the enforcement arm of the Gulf cartel and is made up of former Mexican soldiers. Photos of the banner were displayed prominently in Mexico’s national media on Monday.

An official of the federal attorney general’s office, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to give his name, told The Associated Press that authorities believe the banner is authentic, although they are still investigating.

He said officials believe the banner may be a response to the government after it posted signs in several cities with the photos of three Zeta members, asking people to call police if they see them.

In Nuevo Laredo, those signs were recently defaced and several had a telephone number written across them, the official said. The same telephone number appeared on the banner. The Associated Press called the number, but a recording said the number does not exist.

Security expert Jose Luis Pineyro said the recruiting effort could be drug traffickers’ way of thumbing their noses at the federal government, but is unlikely to be an effective way of bringing in new blood.

“On the contrary, those who have decided to desert or remain inside the armed forces as spies are already doing that,” Pineyro said.

Earlier this month, law enforcement officials said drug cartels were using classified ads to lure young Mexicans in Ciudad Juarez into unknowingly working as drug couriers.

Mexico City’s El Universal newspaper first reported the trend, citing ads in Ciudad Juarez newspapers that require applicants to have the U.S. visa needed to drive a vehicle across the border but do not mention job experience.

A federal official, not authorized to give his name, said applicants often think they are applying to become messengers, but they end up unwittingly driving vehicles loaded with drugs into neighboring El Paso, Texas.

Chris Mears, a spokesman for the El Paso Police Department, said he was aware of the trend and had seen several teenagers charged after being found with loads of drugs in their cars.

Tighter border security on both sides has forced drug cartels to find creative ways to move their contraband into the U.S.

Mexican authorities say cartels are training new recruits in the face of President Felipe Calderon’s nationwide crackdown. Since taking office in 2006, Calderon has sent more than 20,000 troops to areas plagued by drug violence.
I think this is a more “in your face” type of stunt that a real recruiting effort. But it makes good news for the fear mongers in the media!

I think what you are saying makes sense. It is a very difficult time we live in and it is good to get all sides or remarks about a story.
    Thank you.

The children of Mexico should be educated enough in order to have a better understanding of the consequences if they are to join miscreants and ruffians in their impious war. The luxury and wealth these criminals display in public is tempting for the daily eye but if we the people repudiate, a better and decent lifestyle we should expect in the near future. I find it uncomprehensible how one could render himself to lunancy. I don’t know how much I could stress about people being cognizant and attentive about the implications of this farcical war.

Now i think that its really bad what is going on over there but the thing that im more concerned over is that if they are recruiting more people it’s because they intend to do the same to the USA as they are doing to Mexico. All the evidence is pointing to that so the question that I'm asking is if the US government is actually planning to do something about helping, or reinforcing borders.

I think in this day and time, people do what they got to do to survive.

And when your trying to stay on the right track people make it hard for you to make a living.

These bloodthristy thugs need to be stoped quick!

I come from a remote area in Mexico, my family there makes an honest living farming and raising livestock.

These scum just crash our celebrations, taking everyones money, who ever has them expensive alligator boots, jewlery, they even pick out the trucks they like and take them at gun point. As many as 30-40 masked men.

But man recently its been more blood, more kiddnappings, and murder. They go into towns take all their livestock or kill it all depending on whatever they want to do. They sometimes take the women, be-head the man of the household and replace his head by placing a pigs head on the mans torso. These foos are sick, what do the kids have to do with any of this?Makes me sad,the kids would be used only to benifit 'los zetas'.

Near these remote towns, it is understood that'los zetas' are operating in some sort of military training. And i guess there using the neighboring towns as tactical practice targets. Its weird, it was nothing like this when i was a kid…now its going on long enough im still in shock.

I hope the U.S. realizes that this is a huge growing problem, MS13 and AlQueida are known to be working with 'los zetas', this is spreading up to our bordering states of Calfornia, Arizona, and Texas.

THESE RUTHLESS PIECES OF NOTHING NEED TO BE STOPED!

Agreed Anabelle. I believe we'll see this stopped in Cd Juarez eventually.

President Calderon is committed to it. He cleaned up Nuevo Laredo. We have not had an incident of cartel violence there in almost two years.

There is no evidence of the presence of Al-Queida in Mexico nor in association with the cartels. State Department and anti terrorism experts have all confirmed that.

The only people repeating this are the pundits and anti Mexican loons who use fear mongering to put across their points.

I didnt mean AlQueida in general, meant to say a few members from there. It wasnt too long ago no more than 2yrs that they arrested a middle eastern dude at the border. Plus if you seen the HISTORY channel hour long about 'los zetas' aired not even two weeks ago, youd put two and two together.

I am starting to see what your talking about I was never aware of this matter myself. Sounds like you better write to the White House and address to Obama, I had no idea all this was going on and the Police can not handle this situation, I am starting to feel like running off to Canada because America has no control over the people here.

  • http://mexicotrucker.com PMC

Anabel, I try to deal in facts. Unfortunately, I did not see the History Channel program you mention.

I take those programs with a grain of salt though. The media has really blown the situation way out of proportion here.

If you believe what the media reports, then there would be people walking the streets with automatic weapons having running gun battles, and that never happened, even at the height of the violence in NL.

There have been a lot of middle eastern people arrested in Mexico. Most, Christian Iraqis and other middle eastern Christians trying to get into the US.

Looking back now, one of my very few errors of opinion. Who could have thought when this post was written, that things would be as they are now. But still, it’s a war between the drug gangs. I won’t justify labeling them cartels. These are common thugs with weapons and no morals or ethics
