Human Rights Pioneer dead at 62

Arturo Solis Gomez, the founder and president of the Center of Border Studies and the Promotion of Human Rights in Reynosa, Mexico, died this morning at a local hospital.
Solis stood strong in the face of threats and government intimidation since starting his human rights organization in the early 90s. In a period when authorities are vague about drug-related killings along the border, the center maintains the most comprehensive list of victims and statistics out there, in my opinion.
The center’s Web site, www.derechoshumanosenmexico.org, also keeps detailed information on drowning victims in the Rio Grande and kidnapping statistics.
Solis also founded the Tamaulipas state news portal www.enlineadirecta.info, which has provided some of the most complete border violence coverage, even while traditional media began to self-censor out of precaution and fear.
Solis had been in the hospital since the weekend, according to report on that Web site.
He was 62.
