Rep. Jeff Flake , R-Ariz., introduced legislation March 19 (HR 1611) that would restart the pilot truck program. He said that would bring the United States into compliance with NAFTA.

“It defies logic that the U.S. would risk a trade war during a recession with our third-largest trading partner just because we refuse to allow less than 100 trucks from Mexico into the country,” Flake said in a statement.

He also sent a letter to President Obama offering to help him put the program back together. Obama has said he is interested in revisiting a cross-border trucking program to honor NAFTA. The president is planning a trip to Mexico in mid-April, where he is expected to discuss the topic.

The bill was immediately assigned to the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure.

It’s a very simple bill, explicit in it’s wording.

To amend the Omnibus Appropriations Act, 2009 to repeal a provision prohibiting the use of funds for a cross-border motor carrier demonstration program to allow Mexican-domiciled motor carriers to operate beyond the commercial zones along the international border between the United States and Mexico.

We’ll see what happens. I think the outcome will be much different than before when Byron Dorgan, in cahoots with Oberstar and Defazio, slipped Section 136 in below the radar.

Meanwhile, as we keep an eye on the pulse of America regarding this issue, the editorial and opinions in newspapers large and small across the country suggest overwhelming opposition to our violation of the NAFTA accords, especially in light of the superb safety and compliance record exhibited by participants in the Cross Border Demonstration Program from both sides of the border.

    "From the most unlikely of corners"? What exactly is unlikely about it? I'll tell you what is unlikely. That Obama would respect NAFTA. Oh and that yet you were glad when he was elected to replace the evil Bush that happened to agree with you on trade policy. Republicans are evil, but you agree with them on trade policy. When are you going to start being rational, and why do you think others should be when you aren't?

    Yes Mark, from the most unlikely of places. Arizona. Where Border Patrol agents murder immigrants in cold blood and get a pass. Where the most extreme of the Minutemen Vigilantes go to play with their assault weapons and pretend to be GI Joe and Jane………..

    Actually, I didn't vote for the man. I did not support him. But since he won the election, I have been pleased with his no nonsense approach to things.

    He paid back the Unions by letting Sec 136 go through. Now it's time for him to do the right thing and let the program run to it's completion.

    I've always been rational. It is the critics of this program who without valid facts to support their position, they have made up situations and told bald faced lies to force the public to agree with their positions.

    The Final OIG Report exposed this and finally, newspapers, economists and the man on the street are finally realizing that the objections to this program is one of the biggest frauds foisted upon the American public!

    Translation: I wanted him bad, but I don't vote and wouldn't anyway just so I can bitch about whoever wins and be above the fray by saying "actually I didn't support whomever" and have maximum wiggle room.

    I agree with you on the dangers of protectionism, it's just that I gag on your politics and how you are a poster child of the "I like this guy" and apologetic attitude about politicians who do reprehensible things. It's painful to watch, like a battered wife that keeps coming back for more.

    The sad thing is that your views on trade are perfectly sensible and your politics don't matter so you'd be better off dropping political pundit routine. You aren't much good at it, whereas you have real knowledge of the trucking industry that is valuable.
