Steve,

There is reciprocity of commercial licenses between Mexico and the US, but only for those involved in the Cross Border Truck Program.

The officer was correct and in your case, that is one of the times when the mordida is a good thing.

Mexican immigration law does not permit us to work for compensation unless it can be proven we are not taking a job that there is a qualified citizen to do it.

You US issued CDL is valid in Mexico, as is mine when operating our personal vehicles.

I like your ending comment, "the next time I’m stopped while driving a CMV within Mexico"!

That's the spirit. It's what I want to do before I retire.

Take care

I'm a US citizen, "semi-retired" and living in Mexico on an FM3 visa. I occasionally work as a charter motor coach operator driving tours within Mexico for a Texas bus company. I also occasionally help a neighbor who has a straight truck drive on deliveries within Mexico, as a favor and without pay. In both cases I am concerned that I do not have a Mexican federal license. (While driving the bus, I was actually stopped by Mexican Federal Police and had to pay a mordita because they said my US license was not valid for driving a commercial vehicle within Mexico.) On the other hand, I have heard about reciprocity of commercial drivers'licenses between the two countries. Should my US-issued CDL be valid within Mexico? If so, can you point me to some proof that is written, perhaps on a Mexican government website, that I could photocopy and carry with me? That might help the next time I'm stopped while driving a CMV within Mexico. Thanks for your help!
