Glenn Beck – Congressman vs. Mr. Sheriff

Glenn Beck – Congressman vs. Mr. Sheriff

Saying he will defend his district against anybody trying to portray it as a “war zone,” U.S. Rep. Henry Cuellar defended Thursday the statements he made during a heated exchange with Webb County Sheriff Rick Flores on national television.”He cannot expect to attack me, to attack my city that I care so much about, and portray it as a war zone,” Cuellar said during a videoconference Friday.

“(People) are going to think Laredo is a bad place to come to.”

The exchange occurred Thursday during a taped interview on CNN’s nightly news show featuring Glenn Beck.

Cuellar said he was invited to the show to talk about Laredo’s missing Americans, but was instead asked questions about federal spending and how much money had been appropriated to fight crime along the Texas-Mexico border.

Flores did not return repeated phone calls requesting comment about Thursday’s events.

During the program, Flores took issue with a proposed aid package to Mexico the federal government says will help combat crime that may spill over into the United States, indicating Cuellar’s support of the package was an affront to local law enforcement.

“I want to ask the congressman, who is he representing: President Calderon or his district here in Laredo, Texas, where we haven’t received any resources at the local level to be able to combat the problems at the border?” Flores said, according to CNN transcripts.

The congressman responded by saying the sheriff should stick to his duties, and that plenty had been allocated to local authorities to help fight crime.

“Well, first of all, let me say this, Mr. Sheriff, what we’re looking at is you have got more money than you’ve ever gotten in the past, and you’ve got to keep in mind that the border will be patrolled by the Border Patrol and by the federal agencies,” Cuellar responded. “We will work with the local law enforcement … but your job is to be a county sheriff, not a U.S. congressman, which is a big difference. My job is to look at the big picture. Your job is to look at the little picture.”

Beck then admonished the congressman for his comment.

“That was the most belittling response I have ever heard,” Beck said. “Shame on you.”

No mention was made of the fact that Cuellar’s brother, Martin Cuellar, is running against Flores in the upcoming county elections; something the congressman spoke about Friday.

“Without mincing words, that’s what came about,” Henry Cuellar said, indicating the exchange was politically motivated.

The debate came just a year following Flores’ endorsement of Cuellar, when he said the congressman had increased “security and vigilance along the border.”

Cuellar said Friday that during his tenure as congressman, local law enforcement had received millions in monetary assistance, and said the proposed foreign aid to Mexico and domestic spending come from two different budgets.

Cuellar also took issue with the show itself, saying Beck needed to respect his guests. He also questioned some of the information the news channel presented.

“They are making the border an area that they are attacking,” Cuellar said. “Why did they have to say that Laredo is 90-percent Mexican-American?”

Asked if he may have lost his temper during the segment, Cuellar said that he hadn’t.

“I kept pretty cool,” he said. “I just said his (Flores’) job is to be the sheriff. He talked about who answers 9-1-1. We all have different jurisdictions.”

Mindy Casso, the congressman’s communications director, said that since Cuellar took office, $1.8 million had been appropriated for law enforcement in Webb County, and $9.8 million for the entire district.

Before the exchange, Beck said he’d had enough with what he called Mexico’s corrupt political system.

“We bend over backwards for that fucking country, and I’ve had it up to here. And most of America has as well,” he said. He prefaced that by saying the media had shut their “pieholes” about the violence along the border.

Flores added that the sheriff’s department had evidence that indicated the Zetas were teaming up with Guatemalan jungle fighters. Friday, Cuellar said he hadn’t heard any of that information from the federal agencies he works with.

Well Henry Cuellar can rant all he wants but the citizens of Laredo as well as in other counties have speculated as to what happened to the friendship that Cuellar had with Judith Zaffirini? What happened to these two? Along with Cuellar's brother running for Sheriff, he is nothing but a political lyer himself and it is a no wonder that he retired from DPS. DPS does not want troopers that lie and lie. For instance, I KNOW for a fact that Zachary is not his biological son-he is from a previous marriage to Veronica. Now for the juicy part, Veronica's ex-husband was threatened by Martin Cuellar to stay away from her or else he would find himself with some narcotic substance and never work again. Yeah- Laredo wake up - do you want a bully and a lyer as your next Sheriff? Going back to this battle between the region of Laredo and Nuevo Laredo. Mr. Henry Cuellar needs to get real and be sincere about the people who voted for him and gave him a job. He would not be making as much money as he does now while being a boring attorney as he has been in the past. He lacks the charisma and the sincerity of being a true human being. That's my take in this and by all means it constitutes as the truth!

Who's to say whether he is a racist or not. I happen to agree with Mike McConnell though that anytime the subject of immigration or anything else inflammatory in todays contentious society comes up, and ones mind immediately goes to Mexican's as the problem, then there is probably a bit of racism there. As far as Glenn Beck is concerned, he is looking for ratings. "He has no idea what he is talking about when it concerns Laredo, Nuevo Laredo or Mexico, only what he has heard third or fourth hand, which is usually a load of crap. I live in Nuevo Laredo. I have never had a moments fear nor concern about traveling the streets and roads of the city at any hour of the day or night. It is not the war zone the talking heads would have you think. I just returned from a trip to Reynosa, using Mx-2 coming and going. No problems at all. From Zetas, Police or Transito. I spent two days in Reynosa. Again, no problems from Police, Transito or the people. It was a very relaxing mini vacation. Sure, there are gang problems in Laredo. And for certain, they are Mexican gangs. So what? We're 95% Mexican, Mexican American population here on the southern border. What would Beck and others expect? Irish gangs? Let's get real. This whole argument is opportunists jumping on the bandwagon and commenting on things they know nothing about!

I am in Reynosa at the moment. I will update this when I return to Nuevo Laredo tomorrow

True, Trailero 1 about what the alleged kidnapped Americans have or have not done. The point that I was trying to make is that I do not believe Beck is a racist, otherwise why would he even care about the kidnapped Mexican Americans. Traveling all around the valley as I do, there are alot of interesting things that are seen. Someone I know had the Zetas come through their ranch several times and leave messages written on their barn, down past Hebbronville (sp). Is there anything you can or would like to share about the US and Mexican authorities?

True, but they are not on every street corner and hiding in all the shadows as Beck and others would have you think. Just more preening and posturing to affect the hysteria over illegal immigrants. But I would ask, what do you really know about the alleged kidnapped Americans? What you don't know, might surprise you and there is a reason that US and Mexican authorities seem not to being doing much about it!

Glenn Beck is not a racist. He was not putting down Laredo. It seems most people maybe including Cuellar are not smart enough to realize Glenn was defending that people have been kidnapped from this area and most have been Hispanic AMERICANS. I happen to live in South Texas and work and travel to the Valley and up the coast almost every day. The Zetas are alive and well, do not think for a minute they aren't.

Makes no difference, it's what he meant......The guys a fool. I was listening to him today ranting about Nuevo Laredo, a subject he knows absolutely nothing about. He made the comment about severed heads being rolled onto the floor of a disco in Nuevo Laredo. Never happened. Maybe he knows that or maybe he's just stupid, or perhaps, he twisted the truth to fit his bias's. (The incident happened in Acapulco several months ago). I'd challenge all these talking heads, self styled experts on the border and on Nuevo Laredo/Laredo to come down here and find the daily firefights, assassinations and gun battles in the streets they report is happening on both sides of the border, because neighbor, it ain't true! The cartels want someone dead, they're dead! Clean, swift, often with surgical precision and very rarely with any collateral damage. These guys are professionals. There are no Zeta's walking the streets with impunity, on either side of the border as they talkers in Washington, New York and Florida would suggest. You wouldn't know one if you saw him. This thing with Cuellar v. Flores is pure politics, south Texas style. Rick Flores runs a department of the highest integrity and honesty. I've met the man, and the Webb County Sheriff's Department reflects Rick Flores personal value. Flores wants more money to run his department and buy the fancy toys. Therefore, he "exaggerates" the situation around the Laredo area. Henry Cuellar has a brother Martin Cuellar. Martin wants to be Sheriff and is running against Flores. See any connection there?

Yeah, um... Glenn did not say this: "We bend over backwards for that fucking country, and I’ve had it up to here." I know television standards and practices aren't what they used to be but last time I checked CNN wasn't allowing their hosts to use the word "fuck" on the air. Clips are all over You Tube if you'd like to check.
