May 23, 11:49 AM EDTMexico Tractor-Trailer Crash Kills 1

MEXICO CITY — A tractor-trailer loaded with sand smashed into a toll booth and rebounded into other vehicles, setting off a blaze that killed 10 people in western Mexico, officials said Wednesday.

A crash at the same toll booth between Tepic and the Pacific beach town of San Blas left 12 dead in December 2005, emergency officials for Nayarit state said.

Nayarit Gov. Ney Gonzalez ordered the immediate closure of the booth.

“They shouldn’t even be charging for this road. It’s in terrible condition,” Gonzalez said.

That being said, as far as can be learned from Federal and State authorities,  the truck was cut off by another vehicle trying to beat the truck to the bottleneck.  More when it becomes available.

It does not appear to be driver error nor a mechanical defect at this point in time
