We all know the controversial Mexican Cross Border Program was extended for two more years on August 8, under Federal guidelines concerning Pilot Programs, and as we reported, Jimmy Hoffa immediately showed his no class ignorance by continuing his boring mantra about those unsafe, dangerous and illegal Mexican trucks, a notion we have continually disproved on this site.
The basis for for that post was Hoffa’s mouthing off in an editorial in the Detroit News editorial pages entitled, Bush lets Mexican trucks menace America’s roads
Giving credit where credit is due, the Detroit News gave equal time for a rebuttal by John Hill head of FMCSA.
And Mr Hill laid it on the line to Hoffa.
Hill’s comments begin with;
Teamsters President James Hoffa claims to place a high value on truth, yet he continuously misstates the facts and conveniently disregards the facts that do not support his case (“Bush lets Mexican trucks menace America’s roads,” Aug.
. He is misleading the public and denying U.S. truckers access to new markets and U.S. consumers’ access to new savings.
The facts paint a very different picture of the significant safety and operational protections put in place as part of a historic effort to open Mexican markets to U.S. truckers and end needless inefficiencies that delay shipments and pollute the air along our southern border
John Hill goes on to state the obvious which Mexico Trucker has proved time and again.
We have met and exceeded every requirement established by Congress, both safety and otherwise, for implementing our obligations under the North American Free Trade Agreement and in following legislative mandates to move forward with this program. As a result, we are supporting our economy by saving consumers’ money, reducing shipping costs and giving U.S. trucking companies and drivers new opportunities.
And ends with a very pointed jab at Hoffa which lays bare the real truth behind Hoffa’s objections over the years.
At a time of surging goods exports, we could hardly choose a worse time to raise the cost of consumer goods, deny U.S. truckers new opportunities or embrace the myopic mythology of xenophobic protectionism.
So everyone will understand John Hill’s last statement, let’s break down his words and you will see what a wise choice of words he made.
- “MYOPIC” a lack of foresight or discernment : a narrow view of something
- “MYTHOLOGY” 2a. “A widespread but untrue or erroneous story or belief”. (1849) or 2c. “A popular conception of a person or thing which exaggerates or idealizes the truth.” (1928)
- “XENOPHOBIC” (Noun) an unreasonable fear or hatred of foreigners or strangers or of that which is foreign or strange.
- “PROTECTIONISM” To define this and further prove the validity of the remarks of John Hill, let’s refer to this excellent article entitledProtectionism never worksby Gary Shapiro, writing for CNET
How then, in the face of this well-documented and ongoing success, are protectionists gaining so much traction by criticizing trade and calling for a return to a utopian, isolationist past that never was?
As it turns out, they’re part of a long, if not proud, tradition.
Protectionists throughout history have had great success exciting passions by appealing to fear: fear of lost jobs, fear of cultural dilution, and fear of the other. Protectionist rhetoric is a proven vote getter, so it’s no surprise to see it dusted off and trotted out like clockwork every election cycle.
What protectionists don’t have is a track record of being right.
I think Mr Hill proved his point rather well by using 4 powerful words, he described Jimmy Hoffa and his meaningless rhetoric about the Cross Border Program exactly as it is.
It is what we have been saying all along. Oh, and by the way, the guy in the vid is a TEAMSTER!
