Janet Napolitano says she supported the DREAM Act as the governor of Arizona, and she supports it now — as secretary of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.
The DREAM Act is a bill that would give undocumented students who want to go to college or serve in the military opportunities to become legal U.S. residents.
Napolitano was asked about the bill Wednesday during a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing in Washington on immigration and border enforcement.
“This is one of those areas that everyone wants the immigration laws enforced, but also deal with the human issues that arise here. … The DREAM Act is a good piece of legislation and a good idea,” Napolitano said.
Advocacy groups for comprehensive immigration reform, like America’s Voice, hailed the comments, calling them a sign that the administration wants action on new immigration laws this year.
