Three men accused of allowing agricultural products infested with a plant pest to enter the U.S. from Mexico appeared in federal court Thursday.In an indictment unsealed Thursday, federal prosecutors allege that Rafael Edmundo Melo Jr., 40, Arturo Ramirez, 46, and Jose Homero Reyes, 48, all of Laredo, conspired to allow improperly fumigated floral greenery and broccoli to enter the U.S., allowing for the possible spread of plant pests. Melo and Reyes, both U.S. Department of Agriculture employees charged with overseeing agricultural product fumigation, falsely claimed overtime hours for fumigation they never conducted. Though springtime typically sees a spike in illegal border crossings, activity has been heavier than usual in Laredo, immigration officials said. In the past two months, agents have thwarted several attempts to smuggle people in large tractor-trailers, charging 41 people — American truck drivers and others — with smuggling. They detained 376 undocumented immigrants from Mexico and Central America, each of whom paid $500 to $3,000 for the trip. A murder trial tinged with international controversy that begins this week will determine whether a U.S. Border Patrol agent was justified in shooting an illegal immigrant near the Mexican border. Jury selection will start Tuesday in federal court in the case of Agent Nicholas Corbett, who is charged with second-degree murder, manslaughter and negligent homicide in the Jan. 12, 2007, death of Francisco Javier Dominguez Rivera. Department of Safety Commissioner Dave Mitchell announced Feb. 25 that the Tennessee Department of Safety (TDOS) is cooperating with the Federal Bureau of Investigation in an on-going investigation of Swift Transportation in Memphis, according to a news release. This action comes after the FBI executed search warrants today at Swift Transportation Commercial Driving School as part of the on-going investigation. The TDOS has a part-time driver license center located at the Swift facility in Memphis. The facility is open Monday, Thursday and Friday only. NUEVO LAREDO – Kidnappers demanding a $10 million ransom for the release of a Dallas man were captured by city police Sunday.The victim, Sergio Diaz de Leon Rivera, was rescued after family members called police to tell of the ransom demand. The five suspects snatched Diaz de Leon Rivera in the downtown historical district Saturday. The suspects appeared at a hearing Monday before a state court on federal charges of illegal deprivation of liberty and criminal association, among others. On Tuesday, February 12, the 9th Circuit heard oral arguments on the frivolous lawsuit brought before it by the Teamsters, OOIDA, Sierra Club and Public Citizen. The day started with members of the Teamsters showing their ass in a demonstration in front of the Federal Courthouse. The Teamsters claim 450 in attendance but other news sources put the attendance at around 100, a fact that photos of the event seem to sustain.
