Phoenix’s branch of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives said on Friday it took 18 automatic weapons bound for Mexico off Arizona streets before they got south of the border. The guns were heading to drug cartels in Mexico from the U.S., said William Newell, special agent in charge, ATF, Phoenix field division. McALLEN -(The Monitor) The former owner of an Edinburg. Texas trucking business was sentenced to 30 years in prison Monday for his role in a drug smuggling and money laundering ring. A federal jury in Houston found Ricardo Garcia Heredia, 44, of McAllen, guilty in May of multiple counts of conspiracy and drug possession. Prosecutors allege Garcia used his business – Edinburg-based Earth Transportation – as a front to recruit drivers for cocaine shipments that passed through the Rio Grande Valley on their way to Chicago.

A U.S. Border Patrol agent told jurors Friday in federal court that she had been involved in the pursuit of a tractor she said was driven by Artis Ryan Miller.The pursuit started when Agent Judy Sepulveda’s canine unit alerted her to the presence of marijuana in a tractor Aug. 2, 2007, at the Border Patrol checkpoint on U.S. 59 near Freer, she said in court. Sepulveda identified Miller in court as the driver of the truck. An agent sent the truck to secondary inspection, but the driver drove off on the highway, Sepulveda said.

HUATULCO, Mexico — Mexico’s navy seized a homemade submarine carrying a drug shipment off the Pacific Coast on Wednesday and arrested its four-man crew. Similar vessels carrying cocaine have been discovered off Colombia and Central America, but navy spokesman Capt. Benjamin Mar said the seizure is a first for Mexico. The 30-foot (10-meter) makeshift submarine was detected heading north about 200 miles (322 kilometers) off the southern state of Oaxaca, Mar said. The green-topped, arrowhead-shaped vessel was intercepted when it surfaced hours later, and the crew was taken into custody without resistance.

McALLEN, Texas – A U.S. Border Patrol agent was charged with conspiracy to distribute cocaine for allegedly helping two Mexican men smuggle 11 bricks of cocaine into the United States. Reynaldo Zuniga, a 34-year-old Border Patrol agent from Harlingen, was paid to pick up one of the men along the Rio Grande and then drive him to a fast food restaurant in Hidalgo, where the other man would pick him up, the U.S. Attorney’s Office said Monday. Authorities took a Smithway Motor Express driver into custody after several undocumented immigrants were found inside his 18-wheeler parked at a South Side convenience store. Undercover drug officers stumbled upon the 18-wheeler during a drug investigation Tuesday night, when they pulled over a man during drug bust at a Shell Gas Station in the 5800 block of South Pan Am Expressway. Richard Medina Torres, 25, the Fort Hood soldier who drove into Mexico with two high-power firearms will be put on trial, federal authorities said in a statement released Saturday Medina earlier was charged with smuggling weapons into Mexico, punishable by up to 30 years.
