Mexico replaces Customs Agents, upgrades border security

Mexico has replaced all 700 of its customs inspectors with agents newly trained to detect contraband, from guns and drugs to TVs and other big-ticket appliances smuggled to avoid import duties. The shake-up — part of a broader effort to root out corruption and improve vigilance at Mexican ports with new technology — doubled the size of Mexico’s customs inspection force. The inspectors were replaced with 1,400 agents who have undergone background checks and months of training, Tax Administration Service spokesman Pedro Canabal said Sunday. Mexico identifies 12 slain as federal agents

MORELIA, Mexico (AP)— Twelve people tortured and killed in a cartel-plagued Mexican state were federal agents investigating organized crime, the government said Tuesday, marking one of the boldest attacks on federal forces since President Felipe Calderon launched his war on drugs. Mexico’s national security spokesman, Monte Alejandro Rubido, said the 11 men and one woman were off duty when they were ambushed and abducted by members of the La Familia drug cartel in Calderon’s home state of Michoacan, which has been a center of his crackdown on organized crime. Former Blaine Border Patrol deputy chief pleads guilty to child rape

BELLINGHAM, Wash. – Joseph Giuliano, the former high-ranking Border Patrol official accused of having sex with a 14-year-old girl, changed his plea to guilty of third-degree child rape Thursday in Whatcom County Superior Court. Chief Criminal Deputy Prosecutor Mac Setter said he’s recommending Giuliano serve one year in custody of the Whatcom County Jail on work release [, Back at the Border Patrol?!?] and three years of sexual deviancy treatment after that, the Bellingham Herald reported. A U.S. Border Patrol officer has been jailed in lieu of $1 million this weekend after he was accused of using his job to rape a woman, the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department said this evening. More delays at the border as US to check cars entering Mexico

In a “letter of intent” signed Monday between the United States and Mexico, U.S. border agents will start checking vehicles entering Mexico for guns and drug money. Mexico arrests cartel leader in Monterrey

Mexican soldiers arrested 13 alleged drug cartel members, including one man who had just arrived on a private plane to take over trafficking operations in the northern city of Monterrey, the Defense Department said. Acting on a tip, soldiers arrested Rodolfo Lopez and several others Monday after they landed at Monterrey’s international airport, the department said in a statement.
