US loses to Mexico 5-0 in CONCACAF Gold Cup

It was an afternoon custom-designed to make Mexicans feel wonderful, at long last, about their treasured national soccer team – courtesy of a regional nemesis. At the same time, the debacle imposed a tough lesson on U.S. officials, who fielded a third-rate cast on an international stage and failed badly in the gamble. The Americans were thumped, humiliated, 5-0, Sunday by Mexico in the Gold Cup final. It was the worst loss anywhere for the U.S. team since a 1985 defeat to England in Los Angeles by the same score. This fiasco was a public relations blow more than a ….Read More

Who will compensate Mexico for false swine flu reports?

The swine flu outbreak that has wrecked Mexico’s economy may become a case study in reckless journalism. It now turns out that it’s not clear whether the H1N1 pandemic originated in Mexico, as first reported, or in the United States. Like most of you, I had taken it for granted that the disease started in Mexico. That’s what most press reports said in late April, when we saw the first headlines about this illness. Some radio and cable television presenters called it the “Mexican flu.” So earlier this week, I found myself scratching my head when I read in a ….Read More

Minuteman Child Killer Co-Hosted Anti-Immigration Event Featuring GOP Presidential Candidates

Firedoglake reports that Shawna Forde, the anti-immigrant leader of the Minuteman American Defense (M.A.D.) who was recently charged with the murder of a 9-year-old Hispanic girl and her father, co-hosted the 2007 Washington State Illegal Immigration Summit that reportedly featured presidential candidates Tom Tancredo, Duncan Hunter, and Fred Thompson. The Reagan Wing, a conservative blog dedicated to picking up Ronald Reagan’s “sword” still features a plug for the summit which it describes as “the pinnacle Conservative event of 2007“: In addition the event is co-hosted by Minutemen American Defense, a Washington state-wide American citizen defense coalition headed by Shawna Forde, a re-born Rock ….Read More

Mexico National Cemetary - Least we forget

Throughout the War with Mexico it was the practice of the U.S. Army, following major military engagements, to burythe dead in mass graves on or near the battlefield where they fell. Generally, this task was performed as quickly as possible for one very practical reason: the warm climate in which most of the war was fought hastened decomposition. The bodies of soldiers who died later of their wounds, or from some other cause, were also buried promptly, usually near whichever building was serving as an army hospital at the time. In towns garrisoned by American troops for long periods, burials ….Read More

US earns Mexico's gratitude over H1N1 response

H1N1 flu has infected Mexico’s relations with China and other countries that have canceled airline flights and halted some trade. But its most prickly neighbor – the United States – now seems like the country’s most loyal friend. Mexico is smarting from what it considers discriminatory actions by countries it had considered friendly, insisting the world should be grateful for its open and aggressive efforts to stem the spread of the H1N1 virus. The shutdown of public life cost Mexico $2.2 billion in the first 10 days after the epidemic was announced. The government sent a plane to pick up ….Read More
