As of September 16, Mexican carriers applying a fuel surcharge of just over 43 cents per kilometer
Starting this week truckers and Mexican carriers affiliated with the National Chamber of Autotransporte de Carga (CANACAR) will implement a fuel surcharge of just over 43 cents per kilometre in addition to their normal rates of haul which average about $2.50 per kilometer, calculated from the increase in the price of diesel.
According to the agency this increase is because so far this year, the price of diesel has been increased 11.1 percent, a situation that will continue after the recent announcement by the federal government that they intend to gradually reduce subsidies for diesel.
CANACAR stressed the fuel surcharge will be tied to the indexed cost of diesel and the projected rate of inflation but will in no way exceed it.
That is why the members of CANACAR decided to implement a Fuel Adjustment Charge (CPAC), as applied in other countries in the world where the price of energy is subject to constant change.
Depending on the amount of subsidy that the federal government allows to offset the cost of diesel, CANCAR will publish the surcharge on it’s website. Each company will then negotiate with it’s customers the new rate.
The concept better known as “Fuel Surcharge” is a separate item on the negotiated rate that allows the transfer of fuel increases or decreases in the net billing.
Mexico conducted a technical study to determine the necessary adjustment factor, considering the cumulative increase of fuel during 2008.
“The study took into account all the variables that influence fuel economy, resulting in a CPAC of 43.0789 cents per kilometre,” explains an announcement published today on CANACARS website.
The same document indicates that CANACAR suggests the fuel surcharge would apply retroactively from September 10 , however, employers agreed that the majority of affiliated companies begin to record such an increase from yesterday, September 15.
According to this agency so far this year there have been 18 increases in the price of diesel. Proof of this is that in January 2008 the price per litre stood at 5.93 pesos ($2.20 per gallon) , while for the September 8 the price had risen to 6.58 pesos per liter ($2.42).
PUBLISHED SURCHARGES
- For a straight Truck $.18 cents per kilometer
- For Semi Trailer 5 or 6 Axles $.29 cents per kilometer
- For Refrigerated Semi Trailer 5 or 6 Axles $.42 cents per kilometer
- For Doubles of any configuration $..42 cents per kilometer
How about that? Fuel surcharges in Mexico! Businessmen doing business! Negotiating with customers on a “take it or leave it” basis?
Seems to me the Mexican trucking industry does business in much the same manner of we do! A competitive advantage over American companies? Possibly but only because these guys know how to cut the fat from the cost of operations and aren’t cutting one another’s throat in the process.
