Laredo Sector Border Patrol agents made several drug seizures in the past few days, netting an estimated $5.6 million worth of illegal drugs.The latest case occurred Monday morning when agents working at the Interstate 35 checkpoint inspected the driver of a 2000 Chevrolet Monte Carlo after a service canine alerted toward the car.

Agents found 24 cellophane-wrapped bundles hidden behind the interior side panels near the back seat.

Twenty-three of the bundles contained methamphetamines weighing 52.4 pounds with an estimated value of $1.6 million.

The last bundle contained 2.4 pounds of cocaine worth an estimated $76,800.

The drugs, the driver and the vehicle were turned over to the Drug Enforcement Administration.

Agents working at the I-35 checkpoint made another seizure Sunday.

In that case, agents were conducting an immigration inspection on the driver of 1995 GMC Suburban when a Border Patrol canine alerted toward the rear of the vehicle.

The vehicle was referred for secondary inspection. Agents found 30 cellophane-wrapped bundles inside the gas tank containing about 75 pounds of cocaine with an estimated value of $2.4 million.

The drugs, the driver and the vehicle were turned over to the Drug Enforcement Administration.

Saturday, agents assigned to the Cotulla station observed the driver of a pickup acting suspiciously.

They observed as the truck made some sudden turns and disappeared down a dirt road.

Moments later the agents came upon the truck that had been abandoned.

They found several cellophane-wrapped bundles, containing about 494 pounds of marijuana with an estimated value of $395,600.

The drugs were turned over to the Drug Enforcement Administration while the truck was turned over to the LaSalle County Sheriff’s Office.

Friday, agents assigned to the Laredo North station responded to reports of suspicious activity on Mines Road.

The agents observed a minivan drive down Trade Center Drive and suddenly stop at the end of the street.

Two occupants jumped from the van and ran into the brush.

The agents looked for the subjects but were unable to find them.

The agents found 10 cellophane-wrapped bundles in the van that contained 458.2 pounds of marijuana worth an estimated $366,560.

The marijuana was turned over to the Drug Enforcement Administration.

In addition to these cases, Laredo Sector agents have recently made several other drug seizures:

• 356.73 pounds of marijuana by Zapata station agents near a Zapata subdivision last Wednesday.
• 232.57 pounds of marijuana from a pickup truck near Falcon State Park by Zapata station agents last Thursday.
• 167.35 pounds of marijuana from a 1997 Dodge Durango by Hebbronville station agents at the checkpoint on Texas 16 on Saturday.
• 77.75 pounds of marijuana from the gas tank of a pickup truck by Hebbronville station agents at the checkpoint on Texas 16 last Wednesday.

To date, Laredo Sector Border Patrol Agents have seized about 101,830 pounds of marijuana and 2,160 pounds of cocaine this fiscal year.

Cool! And does anyone see the anomaly here? Not one Mexican big rig involved, and surprisingly, no American rigs which seems to be the norm these days.
