Questions from a reader answered.

We have some questions presented by a reader that I think deserve an answer and if we can keep the comments civilized and insightful, we all might learn something from the thread. This is the comment that I am referring to and we’ll take them one by one. You might not like the answers, but take a moment to think about them.
This country needs immigration reform and it would be so simple if P.C was not the buzz word of the year.
I agree this country needs immigration reform but the solution is not as cut and dried as you and others assume it is. And I will point out something you may not like. Out of the 20 million illegals thought to be in this country, only and estimated half of that number is Mexican or OTM. This alone shows your bias towards the issue. Now, let’s get to it……
1. ALL MEXICANS MUST LEAVE THE U.S.A by 1-1-2008 ( no excuses )
How do you define a Mexican? Legal, Illegal or simply, as I suppose all Mexicans? Your bias is showing again. An interesting idea which would not have a snowballs chance in hell of working.
2. ALL MEXICANS would have to apply for a work visa and that visa would only be good for the original employer and only for 3 months. Why three months? It would take 6 to 18 months to get the thing. I don’t have a problem with applying for a work visa but Congress would have to significantly raise the cap on the number that could be issued and streamline the application process. A better idea would be for a work visa with a 3 year limit renewable a limited number of times but only after the worker has returned to their home country for a period of 8-12 months. And with the visa, permit entries and exits so the worker could return home for the holidays and return to work.
3. After 3 Months the worker MUST leave ( NO excuses )
See above answer. 3 months is unreasonable and illogical.
4. A person could only apply once in any calender year.
Again, see answer to number 2. Historically, workers in this country illegally have gone home, never to return after 3 or 4 years working in this country. You could see it on all the highways heading to the border during Christmas and Easter. The majority come here, work, support their families at home, save money and return to buy homes or open businesses. That my friend is a natural fact and has been for decades.
5. The worker MUST agree to pay for ANY and All services used while here.
Workers already pay for the majority services used while in the country. They are not entitled to welfare nor food stamps nor housing assistance as some would have you believe. I am sure there may be small pockets where there are exceptions to this, but overall, they illegals cannot get social services. (Emergency care is the exception which is a service guaranteed to anyone in this country regardless of immigration status)
6. The worker understands that they are Temp. residents of the U.S.A. and this dosen’t intitle them or their children or family to U.S. Citizenship. This is a given and all the hispanic illegals in the country realize this. I see your hidden message here so the answer is to change the 14th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. I fail to see why giving citizenship to a newborn baby bothers you people so much. It doesn’t cost you a nickel.
7. No children born to a Mexican National could claim citizenship.
Change the 14th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution which the Supreme Court has held that all born on U.S. soil are U.S. citizens. Doesn’t bother me a bit.
8. The worker could not bring any family to the U.S with him or her.
Most workers don’t bring family now. They are brothers, husbands, nieces, nephews who come north sponsored by family at home so they can provide support for the family. Families are formed sometimes when illegals get together in the U.S.
9. All Mexican Nationals would have to have a compleat medical check before entering the U.S.A and no pregnant women can enter the U.S.A for any reason. No on with any medical issues or mental issues should be admitted
Any nationality must submit to a medical exam before receiving green cards or non resident alien cards. You want to see a discrimination lawsuit? Pursue you idea about the pregnant women. You and others of your kind seem to think Mexico is a hotbed of disease and illness. That simply could not be further from the truth. Children are immunized on the same schedule as American school children and against the same diseases.
10. No one with any kind of Criminal back ground should be admitted to the U.S.A.
Supposedly, nobody with a criminal background is supposed to be admitted for any reason. I agree with you. Criminal background checks are a part of the visa process. From B1/B2 Lasers to worker visa’s to green cards. That law is on the books and enforced.
11. If found to have any Mental or Medical issues the worker should be returned to Mexico at the cost of the Mexican goverment with in one day of illness or signs of mental instability. Again, your bias is showing. And you are talking one hell of a discrimination lawsuit. And besides? What if the worker is from France or England or Canada? Why should they be returned to Mexico at the expense of the Mexican government?
12. Any one caught trying to sneak in the U.S.A. with out a valid Visa should be treated as a possible spy and prossacuted as a terrorest. Because these people are not spies and they are not terrorists. You would be hard pressed to find anyone in Mexico wishing harm on the United States.
13. any one caught breaking any of the above rules would never be allowed to enter the U.S.A. again in his or her life time. Anyone caught breaking the rules now are forbidden from applying or receiving any type of entry visa for a period of 10 years. Second violation they are banned for life.
Now, does that answer your questions? You see, immigration reform is not as cut and dried as you think it is.
Build a wall, they’ll breach it. Guard the wall and you don’t need the wall.
The U.S. government needs to abandon the mindset that there are 100 million Mexicans chomping at the bit to get into this country. That is not the case.
Relax the requirements and let them in. They will leave when told to if they know they can return at will. I know that sounds stupid but it is the truth. Find a sensible way to document those who cross the border. We have the technology and they will obey the rules. Otherwise, hungry people will continue to ignore the rules and your efforts to secure the borders will simply keep them in the country.
