Mexico Trucker and Mike McConnell

What I take as a sign of Mexicotrucker.com becoming increasingly relevant and credible in the blogosphere, it was nonetheless a surprise to receive a request from the producer of the Mike McConnell Radio Talk Show. I’m a private person and considered the request carefully with the intent of politely declining as I had a similar invitation from Dave Nemo earlier in the week.

But I didn’t and accepted, a decision I don’t regret. The thing that decided it
for me was the abuse and criticism heaped on Mike by the idiots who call Steve Sommers in the overnight, ridiculing Mike in his attempts to show the lunacy of some of the critics of the Mexican Pilot Program. The idea is that this group of people are a minority in our industry. The rest of us, normal people with families and a career we care about.

So after running hard all night to get back to Laredo where I had a cell signal and grabbing 15 minutes of sleep, the phone rings and the producer is on the line advising Mike will be with me shortly.

Maybe 5 minutes before show time, Mike comes on the phone. There are no instructions on what to say, or how to say it other than to remind me not to say “Good Morning” since the program is syndicated. What strikes me is Mike McConnell is actually a nice guy off the air. The “brusqueness” is part of the on-air persona.

At any rate, it is said that everyone gets their “15 minutes of fame” and I guess I was fortunate to get 45. After the initial period of “nerves” and getting my eyes open and brain in gear, it wasn’t bad. I’d do it again if asked.

The only regret I have is sharing air time with “Big Ed”, the sweetheart of the ATN crowd in the overnight, and allegedly, the wife of Bubba Bo’s good friend, “Strawberry Cowboy” This guy is rude, crude and without an ounce of class or manners. But you gotta love how McConnell handled him in the second hour of the program. Listen to the podcast to see what I mean.

Some afterthoughts though. Some people emailed Mike asking “who is this guy? Santa Claus” and “nobody is this good”, “what’s the deal”? My answer to this;

I am no different from most of you, with perhaps one exception. I don’t believe in “conspiracy theories” or other nutcase ideas. If I have doubts about something, I find the answer. I will listen to all sides of an argument and if doubts remain, I will research the truth. Some of these idiotic items of propaganda are so unbelievable as to defy logic why anyone would believe them. But as a minority of people can not be bothered to let facts get in the way of their beliefs, I choose to publish the results of my research here. Facts are irrefutable. Hype and misinformation can easily be debunked and that is why Mexicotrucker.com exists.

Some caller who identifies herself as “baby bear” called Steve Sommers last night making disparaging and irrelevant comments about Mexicotrucker.com and of course Steve had something equally idiotic to say such as “yeah, he listens to us, Bozo, Bill, Rollye James. When does he sleep?” The answer is, when I’m tired. I also read at least a dozen newspapers and journals online each day looking for items of interest and I have an extensive “Google Alerts” which alerts me to items posted to webs and blogs.

I prefer to drive in the overnight when possible and while I don’t listen to ATN “religiously” as they seem to think, listening to the B.S. is a good way to make it through the night. After ATN, I’ll catch Landline Now to see if there is anything of interest, although there rarely is. From there, Nemo for a while although I don’t care for the music format he uses. I am looking for information and opinions. CNN, Fox News on XM until McConnell comes on. Depending on the guests on McConnell, I flip over to Bill Mack to check the days subjects although most mornings, I’m down for my morning nap. If I miss McConnell at 9 on XM 173, I catch the replay on XM 165 at noon eastern. I guess I’m an info junky. Come 3 pm my time, I’ll check out Bozo to see what outrageous claims he is ranting about and try to calculate how many DEPENDS he will soil before his rant is finished. But anyway, enough about me.

Listen to the podcasts and enjoy, or not. Your choice. Have a wonderful weekend. Mexico Trucker will be enroute to Georgia this weekend for Monday morning and in Lebanon Tennessee Monday afternoon before returning to Laredo and home

Sir, I would agree with the comment you made about Steve Somers show I did not listen to the McConnell show, But you should give Dave Nemo a chance. He is a vary good man he treats his guest with respect and will treat you fair. He will ask and allow hard questions to be asked. You however will be given the full chance to respond and explain where you stand and why. Dave in short IS a pro and will treat like one as well. Talk to him!

    Quick Carl

I have reconsidered and if the offer is still open, I will accept. I’ve listened to Nemo since the days of the Road Gang with Charlie Douglas and have a lot of admiration for him and his professionalism. My reason for declining the invitation was simply a case of “nerves” as I am normally a private person.

There is a lot of things nobody can possible know about this Mexican Demonstration Program unless they can see into the future. I try to present the facts and let them stand on their own merits. The opposition has no facts at all to support their positions.

Mike should be the hero to a lot of people for his ability to cut through the B.S. and get to the facts.

I loved the manner in which he put “Big Ed” in his place. Thank God “Big Ed” is not representative of the American trucker.

The one thing Big Ed mentioned that did make sense is that we don’t have enough enforcement for our own trucks. Which is true, but stopping Mexican trucks isn’t going to fix that problem.

This is true and also, if these people are successful into conning the Senators into cutting funding for the program, we are going to have even less as the funding for the program funds the inspectors positions. But they haven’t considered that. All that is in their mind is no MEXICANS!
