N.L. city police recognized for arrest

NUEVO LAREDO - In recognition for helping advance justice in the United States, the Laredo Sector of the U.S. Border Patrol recognized several Nuevo Laredo police officers at a ceremony at the U.S. Consulate on Wednesday. The recognition was for the June 25 apprehension of a Texas man, Jordan Davidson, who is accused of shooting and wounding a Border Patrol agent in Laredo and then crossing the border into Nuevo Laredo, where he was captured and returned.

Carlos X. Carrillo, chief of the Border Patrol’s Laredo Sector, said this binational cooperation benefited justice on both sides of the river.

“Criminals who in the past committed a crime on one side and then crossed to the other in order to escape justice no longer have this opportunity,” Carrillo told those at the ceremony.

“These Mexican police officers, brave men all, and national heroes, worked to protect the interests of both communities,” he added.

Recognized were city police Chief Guillermo Landa Gudiño; commanders Octavio Castillo Conde, Germán Morales Hernández, Mauricio Martín González and Humberto Rodríguez Moreno; patrolmen Jesús Vargas Arévalo and Juan Antonio Mejía; and emergency center operator Nora Morales Sánchez.

Nuevo Laredo police arrested Davidson 15 hours after the emergency center, also known as C-4, alerted patrolmen of Davidson’s crossing into Mexico.

Carrillo characterized the cooperation between U.S. and Mexican authorities as “excellent.”

Landa Gudiño said it is the city police department’s responsibility to protect the public’s safety, and those who violate laws will be brought to justice.

“I congratulate these officers because they have the responsibility to protect both the local and international communities,” Landa Gudiño said.

Other officials present were Nuevo Laredo Mayor Daniel Peña, Mexico’s Consular official in Laredo Javier Abud and U.S. Consul in Nuevo Laredo David Stone, among many others.
