White House presses Senate to allow Mexican trucks
Stalls bill passed by House that would block program permitting rigs in U.S.
One of the few things I agree with President Bush on is the Mexican truck program. In this instance, America, for once, needs to face up to it’s obligations and follow through on agreements made in good faith amongst all parties. This is what President Bush is attempting to do.
Sources within the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation have confirmed in background conversations that the panel has put on hold taking any action on the Safe American Roads Act of 2007, the bill the House passed May 15 by a vote of 411-3.
At the encouragement of the White House, the senators on the transportation committee are taking the position that the requirements of the Safe American Roads Act were wrapped into the provisions of H.R. 2206, the Iraq supplemental funding bill, signed May 25 by President Bush.
Despite the best efforts of self interest groups, flooding the media and airwaves with campaigns of deliberate misinformation.
Todd Spencer of OOIDA is one of these. Is he really concerned with safety as he would want you to think or is his ranting simply self serving rhetoric in order to boost the membership of his organization? What will it take to satisfy this bozo?
An unhappy Todd Spencer, executive director of the Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association, believes the Bush administration “has preordained that the Mexican truck demonstration project will begin regardless who objects.”
“Simply put, the Bush administration has turned a tin ear to both the public and the Congress and there are no objections which can put a stop to the DOT plans,” said Spencer
Get over it Todd, Steve Sommers and all the rst of the critics who are perpetrating this myth that Mexican trucks are unsafe. If you want to do something about highway safety, look in your own backyard, at some of you members
Once again, this has been a week, when almost daily, there are reports of major truck accidents, many with fatalities, caused by the inattention and stupidity of the drivers.
In Mexico, it has been more than a month since a report of a tractor trailer accident or mishap, and people, those things make the news down here.
