Immigration Debate - Comments from the American People

Despite the fact that most would have you believe that Americans are overwhelmingly against the Immigration Reform Bill, a sampling of comment taken from various blogs and news sources across the internet supports the polls that 57% of American’s want the bill passed.

From ABC News

I am a public school educator, so I am a witness to the hardships that undocumented immigrants and their families face. It literally sickens me to see all the ignorance, all the intolerance, all the hatred that inflicts so many Americans. Amazingly, even a substantial number of self-described “liberals” display such indecent attitudes. Last time I checked, the word “liberal” used to describe someone who valued the concept of LIBERTY. How times have changed… for the worse! As a history expert, I recognize that nativism is not new. Xenophobia is a long-standing tradition in this nation. Perhaps someday, we will reach the point when anti-intellectualism will no longer be an American hallmark. Sadly, that day has yet to come. Undocumented immigrants come to this nation to WORK. They are working their tails off, receiving far too little pay for all the services they perform for us. “Illegal immigrant” is an improper term. Entering the U.S. without documentation is a tort offense, a civil offense. Not a criminal offense. Furthermore, no person can be illegal. When the haters resort to such rhetoric, it shows that they know that they are on the losing side of this battle. Justice shall prevail, one day or another. Si se puede.

And another comment from ABC News

THANK YOU for supporting the ideals of justice, fairness, equality, and liberty. Prepare for the onslaught as the opponents of immigrants’ rights attack you for taking a correct stand. Remember that I and many Americans support you and your efforts. This Southern #### SUPPORTS immigrants’ rights! Si se puede!

And this:

As a child I came to this Country “Illegally.” The Immigration Reform Act of 1987 gave me the opportunity to become a legal resident. Today, I am a naturalized US Citizen and as a registered voter in the State of California I give my support for a much needed Immigration Reform Act. Piolin, “Gracias” para ser la voz de los que no tienen voz.

And from the Houston Chronicle:

I am wondering why all of you ignorant and uneducated people oppose immigration. Where did you come from? Was your family always here in America? No. Everyone here has ancestors that came here from somewhere else. How can you think that we should decide that this is the cutoff point for people to move here and begin a better life? The problem with many of you is that you never think about what it would be like to be in someone else’s shoes. You live here and you want to keep illegal immigrants out. How kind. The Statue of Liberty welcomes everyone - ‘your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to be free’ - EVERYONE here to the U.S. Someone said this is a ’sellout of the United States’. If the U.S. stopped allowing people to immigrate here, THAT would be a sellout, because freedom is what this country is supposed to be all about. I guess you all think that freedom is only for you, and not for anyone else.
