Cops charged in Monterrey

It’s D-Day for many of the 140-plus police officers arrested last month in the border state of Nuevo León.

El Norte is reporting this morning that 36 police officers were charged related to organized crime late Monday.

Another 50 were freed after serving a 30-day court-ordered incarceration, bringing to 64 police officers who have been charged by state authorities this month, according to El Norte.

Under state law, a judge can throw out charges or order a trial during a three- to six-day review period after charges are presented.

As many as 50 police officers are still awaiting their fate.

The arrests followed a military raid on what local media referred to as a bunker.

It is believed that authorities uncovered records bearing the names of police officers on the take from drug gangs.

Authorities acknowledged this list as a possible lead in the investigation but added that they had additional evidence in leading to the arrests.

The police were arrested in twelve municipalities in spanning northern Nuevo León, in an area that authorities referred to as a corridor for drug traffickers.
